World Environment Day
World Environment Day was first established in 1972 when the United Nations General Assembly declared the 5th June as a day to celebrate our environment and take up the challenge of a viable and equitable balance between environment, development and a sustainable future. Each year since, it has gathered momentum and now is one of the largest global environmental celebrations with over 100 countries participating in this year’s celebrations.
The Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival is regarded as one of the signature environmental events in the Sunshine Coast’s calendar.
This year’s theme for the Sunshine Coast event is ‘A festival of Ideas’ and 2011 also marks the ‘International Year of Forests’, meaning that the festival this year is primed to be the biggest yet. The 2011 festival will feature between 50 -75 exhibitors across a number of themed areas, attract in excess of 5,000 visitors and host a Speaker Forum with 5 guest speakers.
This year marks the 31st year that the festival has been operating on the Sunshine Coast and is organised in partnership between the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC), the Sunshine Coast Council and the University of the Sunshine Coast.
